Review: Arturo Fuente Destino Al Siglo 13

Today we will be looking at quite a rare cigar, the Arturo Fuente Destino Al Siglo 13. This cigar and blend was created to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia in 2002. Unfortunately due to packaging delays the cigars were not released when they were first supposed to be. However in 2003 100 boxes of 13 cigars were sold to the first people to put their credit cards down in late 2003. This is a pre-released version of what may become a special anniversary cigar for Fuente, the name of which will be “Don Arturo Destino al Siglo”.

Finally in 2008 these cigars were released officially as Sun Grown half of the Don Arturo Gran AniverXario cigars. Before 2008 and after 2003 when the first 100 boxes of the pre release version were released you could also find these cigars being handed out at the CFC at 2005, 2006 and 2007 with each cigar band containing the respective year on it. Currently Casa Fuente also sells these cigars with the signature band on them but they do not have a date on the back of them. As crazy as it seems with all these different dates and different bands and different releases all of these cigars were rolled at the exact same time spanning 8 months in 2001. Here is some info I found on the internet regarding the blend and the idea behind the name of the cigar as well as a list of the breakdown of releases:

The wrapper on these cigars is from an entirely different seed than the famous Opus X Rosado wrapper, grown on the Fuente farm in a special 13 acre plot of land (hence the “13″ nickname). These cigars were all rolled at the same time, spanning 8 months or so of 2001. They have not been made since.

Internally, the cigars are referred to as “Project L”, with the “L” standing for Love and Lithography (which should give you an idea of what the final bands will look like). The signature on the band with the actual signature of Arturo Fuente (who founded the Fuente cigar company), taken from his immigration signature.

There are five banded variants of these cigars:

  1. Boxed AF 13 cigars have serial numbers on the back of their bands, indicating their place in the limited production run.
  2. AF 13 cigars given out at both CFC 2005 & 2007 have “2005″ printed on the back of the band.
  3. AF 13 cigars given out at CFC 2006 have “2006″ printed on the back of the band.
  4. AF 13 cigars sold at Casa Fuente in Las Vegas has nothing on the back of the band.
  5. The Sun Grown Don Arturo Gran AniverXario cigars are also AF 13 cigars.

(thanks to Vitolas.net for the info)

The cigar sports a very dark sun grown wrapper with some veins and a tight seamless wrap. It has what looks like a single cap but it’s very hard to tell, the cap looks almost uniform with the wrapper. The cigar is VERY firm and feels like it’s packed very tight. It’s also a bit box pressed on the bottom side, it feels flat like if this came in a dress box it would have been on the bottom layer. Not sure how these specific ones handed out at the CFC were boxes or stored but it appears it’s been altered in some way by the way it was sitting.

The prelight aroma is full of chocolate and cinnamon with a touch of pepper. The cinnamon is quite strong; very Opus like. The prelight draw is very earthy, it tastes like what wet earth and grass smells like. There is also a hint of that cinnamon note as well as a touch of cedar. A very decent pre light and im looking forward to lighting this up.

Starting off in the first third the cigar is very peppery. Not a tingling pepper spice but more of a black pepper taste. The cigar is quite bitter and dry for the first inch but then the cigar opens up a bit to some more enjoyable flavors. The profile turns a touch creamier and I detect a distinct wood flavor as well as a bit of leather. The finish is incredible short. There is almost no finish at all and it’s very dry. The burn however is perfect as well as the draw.

Coming into the second third the pepper note has completely left as well as most of the other noticeable flavors. All I am left with is a mild tobacco flavor and a slight touch of wood. I am really struggling to get any kind of flavor out of this cigar at this point. Its very mild bodied and has almost no strength at all, very disappointing so far.

Finishing up in the final third the cigar has just completely failed at exciting me. There is just absolutely no flavor here to speak of except a very mild tobacco note and a touch of wood. It literally feels like I am just smoking hot air. The only positive aspect to speak of is the draw and the burn which have been absolutely perfect. Unfortunately in this case that is not nearly enough. Towards the nub the cigar got very bitter and I struggled to nub it. The only reason I do is that I like to get a nub shot.

Final Notes:

  • To say I was disappointed in this cigar could be the biggest understatement of the year. Considering the tobacco in it, the rarity and age factor I was expecting a lot more. Except for the tiny bit of flavor in the first third there were almost no flavors to speak of.
  • I can not get over how amazing the prelight experience was, compared to the actual smoking experience. I was so excited when first smelling this thing, and it just went downhill from there.
  • I really wish I could have smoked one of these when they were rolled. I would love to have another perspective on it and see if it was at least once a good cigar. Perhaps it was but it’s definitely past its prime.
  • Final Smoking time was 1 hour 39 minutes.

The Bottom Line: “Horrible.” That is really the one word to describe the bottom line here. The thing I find myself thinking is, “Man I can’t believe people pay $125 for these at casa fuente”. I certainly didn’t pay that much for this cigar, but I paid quite a bit regardless. This is one serious dog rocket and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Honestly, the only thing that saved it from being an even lower score was the amazing prelight notes, and the astounding construction, burn and draw. I would love to hear some feedback of others that have smoked this cigar. Until then, please don’t waste your money on this.

[Brooks' Note: I have also smoked two of these for a review I was going to do before Steve decided to do it, and my notes were almost exactly like his. To me, this is one of those overpriced, over hyped cigars that is a total waste of money. I would rather smoke a Rocky Patel 2nd then one of these, as at least I could pay for one of those with the change out of my vacuem cleaner. ~ed.]

Final Score: 62

I need to bring in a dissenting opinion on this one. I just smoked one, banded as a DAGA Sun Grown, and I really loved it. The one I smoked started with a fantastic Opus-esque leather/wood flavor profile and progressed into a dark chocolate like what i'd associate with a Padron 45th Maduro.

If y'all have any you want to unload, let me know. =)

"I would rather smoke a Rocky Patel 2nd..."

Now that is saying something.

I really hate to agree with the score, but I've had a couple and unfortunately do. Others love em. I'd rather have an AF Cuban Beli and pocket the other 120 bucks. :)

Greatbigc - I smoked the one from cfc 2006. If you look at one of the pre light photos you can see the 2006 on the back of the band. Although it hardly matters because every single one of them were rolled at the same time. They just have different bands.

I'd be interested in knowing which one of the five variant you smoked.
Seems like they should all suck equally bad but I've heard mostly good comments about the originals.i

I never smoked a Fuente that I've enjoyed and I have smoked them all
only because my childhood friend in the states sent them to me.
He even stoped smoking them. Years ago he sent me an OPUS X,
Ever since, I have always asked myself, how can anyone pay that kind
of money for such a cigar. $125 for a cigar like that ? Do you know how
many "WHITE OWLS" you can buy with that ?

I have smoked a few of them and quite enjoyed them. Few things that helped me I think are I don't think about price, really ever, second is for some reason I have been gaining a taste for mild smokes. Maybe I will smoke another this weekend and see if I still enjoy it.

Cigar seeker -" Does the zero end of the scale have any meaning?" when looking at 0-70 no it doesn't in my opinion. Anything below 70 i put in the "don't even bother category". When looking at the scale from 0-70 each point is really insignificant because once you get that low it hardly matters just as on the other end of the spectrum with 90-100, each point takes on a much greater significance. This cigar would have rated well under 70 had it not been for the pre light aroma and absolutely flawless burn and overall construction. The word "horrible" is focused mainly on the flavor and complexity in which there were almost none. Also the word horrible was simply the word i thought of when i compared the sharp contrast of the pre light experience to the overall smoking experience. I was expecting a fabulous 90 plus point cigar honestly and what i got was not even close. Had i been smoking a less coveted and cheaper cigar perhaps that would have soften the blow.

Hope this helps and thanks for reading and posting!

A little surprised at how HIGH the final score was. As I approached the "bottom line" I was thinking it would be around a 70. But then when I saw the word "horrible," I thought it would come in under 50 even considering the redeeming positive qualities. If a horrible cigar gets a rating of 73, can a rating ever really come in under 50? Does the "zero" end of the scale have any meaning?

Someone gifted this smoke to me and I can remember how disappointed I was, as well. I don't think I'd go so far as to call it a dog rocket, but it was definitely disappointing. I wouldn't even pick these up if they were still available at $13.
