Review: San Cristóbal O’Reilly (2009)
In 2001 Habanos S.A Introduced the Habanos Collection Book Series. It consists of a layout of cigars presented in a special book shaped humidor. Each year so far a different Brand has been chosen for the program with Cuaba being first. Here is a full list of the releases to date.
- 2001 – Cuaba Salomones I – 7.2 x 57 Double Perfecto
- 2002 – Partagas Serie C No.1 – 6.7 x 48 Robusto Extra
- 2003 – Hoyo de Monterrey Lusitania’s- 7.2 x 50 Double Robusto
- 2004 – Romeo Y Julieta Fabulosos No.6 – 7.1 x 50 Double Robusto
- 2005 – Montecristo Maravillas (which we reviewed HERE)- 7.2 x 55 Double Robusto
- 2006 – Trinidad Torre Iznagas – 6.7 x 52 Double Robusto
- 2007- H.Upmann Magnum Especial – 6.7 x 55 Double Robusto
- 2008 – Cohiba Sublimes Extra – 7.2 x 54 Double Robusto
- 2009 – San Cristóbal – O’Reilly – 6.3 x 56 Double Robusto
As you can see, the common theme in all of the releases is large sized and large RG cigars. The list is filled with large sized robustos and even a massive perfecto. For this review I will be doing the 2009 release, The San Cristóbal O’Reilly. Only 1,000 books were made for this release and each book contains 20 cigars (so only 20,000 cigars total produced). Here is a look at the San Cistobal O’Reilly Book itself (photos courtsy of www.cubancigarwebsite.com):

For this years 2010 Book collection Habanos has announced they will be releasing the Bolívar Grand Belicoso. Keeping up with the large cigar format it will be a 7.1 x 54 Double Pyramid. Here are some photos:

On the prelight aroma I get a mild cedar, hay and a touch of pepper. It has an overall light scent to it. It sports a very light chocolate Colorado Shade Wrapper typical with San Cristóbals. It has a couple veins but has an overall very smooth feel to it. I am a sucker for the San Cristóbal band and this doesn’t disappoint. It has a very plain but elegant look to it. On the prelight draw I get a nice aged cedar taste mixed with an overall mild but sweet tobacco taste. The draw is a bit loose but is really to be expected with these large gauge cigars.
Right off the bat, in the first third, I am hit with a very sharp bitter taste. After a few puffs the bitterness subsides and I am finally able to detect some opening flavors. I am getting some hay, wood, and a touch of coffee. Very rough opening start though. I am really hoping this gets better.

As I move into the second third the bitterness has thankfully all but disappeared, and the cigar has also mellowed out nicely. I am getting a nice nutty flavor as well as some milder cedar notes. There is also a nice creamy coffee note on the finish. While these flavors are nice, but I am getting an overall dry papery character under all this. The performance of the cigar is great however; perfect burn and the draw is fine.

The final third is a continuation of the last. The cigar is a solid medium body at this point. A touch of chocolate has come into the picture and mixed with the cedar, nuts and coffee would usually make this a very nice easy flavored, complex stick. I just can’t seem to get away from the dry papery characteristic that this cigar has in the background. While it’s not as bad as the second third it’s still an issue.

Final Notes:
- Honestly, this cigar had a really terrible opening which really set the tone for the whole cigar. Despite the problems, it did have some really decent flavors, but unfortunately that papery character left me unable to enjoy them as much as I would have liked.
- It is my understanding that these cigars do not contain any significantly aged leaf. They are simply a unique size. This could explain my experience and we could chalk this up to be simply a young cigar in need of some humidor time.
- Final smoking time was 1 hour and 34 minutes.
The Bottom Line: Sadly, this cigar just didn’t do it for me. It had all the makings of a good cigar but the dry paper note just ruined the whole thing for me. I am not sure if I got a bad stick or if this cigar just needs to be put down for a while. I have had heard a lot of great things about this cigar so it leaves me very confused. I guess it’s just one of those things. I will revisit this cigar in 6 months, but until then I hope everyone has a better experience with it than I did.
Final Score: 82

tough titty Steve, looks like you got a dud stick. sucks considering the price of these things. I've only smoked 1 so far and it was definitely one of the best cigars I've had this year. It was anything but mild. i heard the 1492's are even worse and more papery dry than a vag with eczema. feel free to send it my way, u got my address heheh
hmmm...mixed reactions from the crowd. Looks like a good smoke...
Thanks for the review, I guess you just got a bad one...Can't wait for the custom review!
hmmmm
second cc and no mention of that fragrant twangage?
its not always forefront, but MOST good cc's emit a healthy dose.
monty and especially upmann deliver loads of the stuff.
or is it just me?
Thanks for the excellent review!
The box of Bolivar's looks tasty. Nice review btw
The only thing i can think of is maybe there was a large stem inside causing the bitter dry flavor flavor. That's all i could imagine. Literally EVERY person i have spoke to has said these were the BOMB so! I just don't know. I look forward to getting another and trying it. Unfortunately i only had one...
the best cigar I have had all year...and if I was having a better year $$$ wise I would buy a book...I rated it a 97...for whatever thats worth..not much
Nice review Steve. Bummer that the cigar wasn't a little more enjoyable for you, especially considering the price point. Hope you have better luck with the next one.
Maybe the runt of the litter... but shouldn't that NEVER happen for such an exclusive, expensive cigar? Nice review, Steve.
I have had two from my book and they are incredible. Very close to the CGR flavors, amazing opening and middle. The last 1/3 is bit over powering and slightly harsh. Not sure what happened with your box, but a lot of other people who have tried this cigar, just loved it.
