Editorial: The Assault on Small Ring Gauge Cigars

Looking at the list of 2009 Cuban ER and EL releases, and  quite a few of the newer releases in the NC community, I started noticing a disturbing trend, the trend against a smaller ring gauge vitola

Now, I am not saying that manufacturers are not producing smaller RGs anymore (the influx of Lanceros is noted), but some of the classic sizes seem be lost in the rush to release the next best 50+ ring gauge cigar…

Out of the 31 New Edición Regional and Edición Limitadas that came out of Cuba in 2009, only five were under a 50 ring gauge.

Oh, I can here it in my mind now, “The Cigar Manufacturers are only giving the public what they are asking for.” And that may be true (to a point), but I also know there are MANY cigar smokers out there who (like me) prefer a smaller ring gauge to a “jawbreaker.” I mean, some of these 50+ RG cigars are almost too big to actually fit in your mouth without choking. (Hold for juvenile comments, and continue…)

The problem is exacerbated by the Habanos S.A. deletions for 2010. The VAST majority of which are under 50 RG.

Now, while I have been talking mostly of Cuban cigars, this is a problem with non-Cuban manufacturers as well…

“So, what is the perfect size cigar then, smartass?” (You may be asking…) Well, in my oh so humble opinion, the Corona Gorda takes the cake. Large enough to give you a decent smoking time, but with a small enough RG to actually be able to taste the wrapper and more importantly, have the flavors of the cigar actually IMPACTED by the taste of the wrapper. Some of the best cigars I have ever had, and some of my absolute favorites are Corona Gordas. Let’s look at a quick list off the top of my head, shall we?

  • Tatuaje Black Label (Jar Release)
  • Cohiba Siglo IV (Yes, I prefer it over the VI)
  • H. Upmann Magnum 46
  • Punch Royal Selection No.11
  • Casa Fuente Corona Gorda
  • VSG Corona Gorda

And on, and on, and on…

So, there you have it, my rant of the month. Hope yall enjoyed it.

Oh, and VIVA LA Corona GORDA!

Amen brother! I'm going to miss all those lanceros they're killing, and the last remaining ninfa is on the block as well:(

With you here buddy, that mag 46 was one of my first CC and it still remains one of my favorites. Wish I hadn't smoked them all so soon.

they're getting rid of my fav. driving cigar - the Diplimaticos #4!

Now while I haven't had a ton of experience with CCs, I do agree with you. I find that the Corona Gorda is probably my favorite size cigar. It's a shame that there are a smaller number of cigars being released in the smaller formats.

Cigar manufacturers are just that: manufacturers. They will follow the market just like any other smart business would. Unfortunately, its usually at the expense of someone else. I thought the introduction of the "NUB" was a sign of an impending apocalypse. or at the very least, a major market shift.

I feel that Cuba is behind on what current size cigars smokers go to now, and they are trying to catch up with what the US market has available.

I can't say i agree fully because my preference is Larger ring gauges. I like a 50-52 ring gauge. But i totally understand where you are coming from and i too enjoy a small corona from time to time and i believe we need variety out there and not just all these large ring gauges.

Corona variations are the way to go. 42-46 RG has an infinite number of possibilities with wrapper influence etc. I do like, however, some big RGs on certain pyramid and torpedo shaped cigars. They can be fun at times, but the best is the corona gorda, grande, etc. lineup

I agree as well. Too often I have heard smokers imply or assume that "more tobacco = more flavor." In my experience, the smaller RGs allow the wrapper to shine, which enhances and concentrates the flavors, while larger RGs of the same blend tend to taste watered down to me. Not always, but most of the time. And while there's no arguing with preferences, I too find that the larger RGs are, uh, *uncomfortable* to smoke. I'm really not happy with Habanos right now for their discontinuation of so many great smaller RG cigars (no more Partagas Connis?!?). And yes, the CG is the king of all vitolas!

Thanks for the rant, Brooks! I hope mine won't be the only voice encouraging you toward more of this personal editorial on your page. Your well-considered opinion is very refreshing, even if I only partially agree with it. Grab those RS11s while you can!
