Editorial: re: I make gimmicky cigars cool

I think we get it… Exclusivo Jar/Black Label Corona Gorda; TNT/Firecracker; Skull & Bones/T110… but seriously, of all the ones to get upset about, the WLP Candela? Dion might have made Candela cool, but I don’t think that justifies an embargo for the rest of the industry on a capa. After all, in the same interview you admitted that Camacho might have made Corojo cool. I get it, you’re friends with Dion and that relationship creates mutual respect between the two of you, but at some point let’s look a little beyond.

Isn’t you being upset, a bunch of drama and sold-out LEs all that Andre wanted and then some? Everytime you or one of your fans opens their mouth regarding Viaje, doesn’t that just solidify the relationship the copying intended on creating? Pete, you are universally regarded as one of the greatest when it comes to cigar marketing, but I can’t see what good railing on Farkas is going to produce? Sure, the issue may be more than just money, but every Tweet, Facebook question and interview is fuel onto a fire that translates into more hype (and sales) for Viaje.

He might be the microcosm of copying/borrowing/mimmicking; but let’s not ignore: Dunhill’s LEs in the 1950s; Fuente’s tiny releases; Camacho’s single farm vintage circa 2005; Perdomo’s wine and champagne marketing; or Cuba. Everybody copies: all Ligero Cain after the T110; Rocky’s VUDU after “The Face”; Toraño’s Single Region after Le Vérité; need I continue?

Pablo Picasso famously said, “Bad artists copy. Great artists steal” and you once said, “As much people try to ignore Cuba in this business, they are the wheel and for me there’s no sense trying to recreate the wheel, I just want to copy better than everybody else.”

the eñd.

....should add Regios Reserva to that list to. Another simply amazing cigar that I wish there was more of. And hopefully there will be based on info on this site!

The release of 2 candelas from the same factory is what pushed me over the edge in terms of "copying." But it is what it is. Don't like it, don't buy the cigars.

But chasing these limited/single store/small batch releases is getting a bit old. So I am extremely happy to see Pete rolling out the Fausto in a blend similar to the T110. Maybe we can see a trend of popular limited releases being rolled out as regular releases.

I'm mildly drunk right now and feel like this is a "drunk rant," as it didn't make a lot of sense. I enjoy the site, but perhaps this is "fuel on the fire" as well. I enjoy an occasional Viaje; however, one cannot deny that Farkas is following the path that Pete laid, in terms of LE's and Personal Blends. Just sayin....

I think you jumped off the deep end on this one. Now I have only seen one Pete interview where he talks about it and a couple tweets. I don't think Pete at all was saying that another Candela should never be made, or even that Viaje should never make one.

The way I took what Pete was saying is, wait! It's from the same factory, maybe even the same freaking wrapper, just wait and give Dion a year, year and half to sell his before the same factory comes out with another one.

All the examples you listed above or different factories, and in some cases years apart. In other words your point, is off point.

Breaking News: Dion indicated last night on Twitter that he was developing a special Culebra...so now we know what to look for in a special, limited Viaje release before the end of the year! LOL

Nicely done Charlie. I agree. If corojo cigars were only made by one company, that would suck. I think Pete's issue was more about it being in the same factory but that is for Dion and Andre to talk about and like Dion said on twitter, "I am making more than a 5 box run..." LOL.

I mostly agree with you on this one, Charlie. Did Dion make candela "cool" again? Sure...but it's not like he's the first one to try. Didn't Camacho have a candela a year or two ago? Fuente has been making candela consistently for years (decades probably). Graycliff has, too. Maybe Farkas is a bit of a copycat, but who's to say he wasn't copying the infamous Iguana by Thompson Cigar? ;)

oops -- hit submit before the thoughts were finished. I think part of Pete's point is that he'd never consider it acceptable to reuse his stuff. Though I find it hard to say no one else can use specific tobacco unless someone is willing to buy it all.

To a degree I wonder if some of it is more everyone following the trend of what smokers want rather than direct copying etc. I do understand part of Pete's point is that they're made in the same factory by the same people his point is that Dion made it work then it was reused. It seems that it's not uncommon place for manufacturers to reuse certain components when making different blends e.g. the wrapper from the Murcielago being used on the La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor. I see both points of it, great write up Charlie.

Well said. How much originality is there by now in a 400+ year-old industry? Just make great cigars and expect to get copied. Look at what Nub did and then the copycats that followed.

What do you think?

You hit the nail on the head, sir! Perfectly said.
